Lee Brice spoke about his newest single, âKilled The Man,â with singer-songwriter and Ten Year Town podcast host Troy Cartwright in a new episode that arrived on Tuesday (November 4).
Cartwright teamed up with Michael Whitworth, Jared Conrad and Chandler Baldwin to write the reflective song, which âsymbolizes the death of a manâs old self, reborn as his best version to serve something greater,â per a previously-issued press release. Brice co-produced the track with Ben Glover and Jerrod Niemann. Brice shared with Cartwright on Ten Year Town that although he didnât write âKilled The Man,â the song â like other career-spanning hits â resonated with him right away.
âWhat a song, and like a life changer for me,â Brice said in a clip from the conversation shared on Instagram. âI donât cut many outside songs. And itâs not because I donât want to. I mean, my biggest songs in my life are outside songs. I wish I could write every single one of my songs. But when I hear an âI Drive Your Truck,â or âDrinking Class,â or âKilled The Man,â itâs like, I mean, duh. And thereâs been a lot of hit songs...that Iâve heard that just werenât me. Iâve been pitched all those songs, and I was like, âwell, Iâve kind of already had an âI Drive Your Truck.ââ You know what I mean? And I can only play so many of those songs in my set, you know? And so, I love to write my songs, but I love to find them because I think a lot of people donât go looking for âem in my position, and I think they should. I think theyâre silly to not. Youâre missing out on the best songs in the world all over this town. You listen to enough of âem, you run across what you wrote.â
Brice previously said in a statement that âto me, âKilled The Manâ is about that kind of love that changes everything. The old me didnât survive it â and Iâm glad he didnât. She buried him, married me, and I came out the other side a different man. âŚWhen I first heard this song, it made me look back at my own life and see the man who I was isnât the man I am today. I think the message is something anyone can relate to as we all strive to evolve and grow through life and its challenges. For me, âKilled The Manâ captures that stripping away of the ego to become who God intended me to be, leaning into family, faith, and something bigger than myself."
Cartwright hosts songwriters, musicians and executives on Ten Year Town to share stories about their journeys in Nashville Tennessee, âthe uncertainties of getting started and what it takes to stay at the top.â Find Ten Year Town on iHeartRadio here, and find the full conversation with Brice here.
