Weakened Beryl Expected To Re-Strengthen Over Gulf

A weakened Beryl was close to moving back over water Friday afternoon.

Beryl retained its tropical storm status while moving over the Yucatan Peninsula, with maximum winds of 65 miles per hour as of the 4 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

"A west-northwestward motion is expected through tonight, with the center forecast to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during the next few hours, " said the NHC. "A turn toward the northwest is expected on Saturday, with the center of Beryl expected to approach the western Gulf coast late Sunday and Sunday night."

"Re-intensification is expected once the center moves back over the Gulf of Mexico, and Beryl is forecast to regain hurricane status on Sunday," forecasters added.

Parts of Louisiana are within the five-day cone of uncertainty, after Beryl is forecast to make landfall along the Texas border.

A hurricane watch and storm surge watch is in effect for the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande northward to Sargent.
