A Delta Air Lines flight made an emergency landing on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, after experiencing engine issues mid-flight. The Airbus A330, operating as Delta Flight 127, was traveling from Madrid to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Sunday (July 6) when it diverted to Lajes Air Base, a joint civilian and military facility.
The flight crew followed safety procedures after detecting a mechanical issue with the right engine. Passengers reported hearing a strange noise and smelling something burning before the engine was shut down. The aircraft landed safely with 282 passengers and 13 crew members on board, and no injuries were reported.
Travelers faced several hours of uncertainty at the remote base, which has limited facilities. Delta dispatched a backup jet to transport passengers to New York, where they arrived late Monday evening. The affected aircraft remains grounded for inspection and repairs.
Delta is reaching out to affected customers to apologize and offer compensation.
