Dan + Shay's Dan Smyers' Rescue Dogs Are The 'Life Of The Party' On Tour

Dan + Shay's Dan Smyers is a huge animal lover.

The country star recently opened up about his passion for rescuing animals and all he and his wife, Abby, have done to help. Through Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, the couple's fostered "probably 30 or 40 dogs and gotten them forever homes, but it's always tough to let them go," the singer told People.

Currently the Smyers family has four dogs, Chief, Macaroni (aka Mac), Joy and Ghost. "They're always making us laugh. It is like a constant form of entertainment," he says, adding, "We no longer need to go to the movies or watch TV shows."

These lucky pups get quite the special treatment at Smyers' home in Nashville. "We treat them probably better than most humans get treated," the singer says. "They live a pretty good life and they are very, very goofy. All of them, they have their own interesting quirks and we love them for it."

Smyers, who is always on the road touring, says all four dogs usually make the trek around the country with him. "Yeah, these are road dogs. They've probably been to more states than most people have," he shares. "They are the life of the party on the road...especially when we get to go somewhere that they're not used to like the beach of something. They love that."

Smyers and Abby got married in Nashville in May 2017. The two have so much passion for this cause that even on their wedding day they requested guests donate to the rescue shelter instead of gifts. "I mean, a little bit goes a long way," Smyers explains. “When you start going to the adoption days, it’s absolutely heartbreaking the things you see, the stories, the surrenders. I mean, how tough these animals have it and they don’t always have a voice.”

Dan + Shay were just named the 2019 CMA Vocal Duo of the Year on Wednesday (November 13). The band will hit the road in 2020 for their first arena tour and of course, Smyers' dogs will join them.
