A snap of Jamie Lynn Spears' 10-year-old wielding a firearm surfaced earlier this week, and the backlash was every bit of scathing as you anticipated it would be.
"Getting her ready for dove season," the Zoey 101 alum's husband Jamie Watson captioned the inflammatory Instagram of Spears' baby girl, Maddie Briann Aldridge, whose father is the actress' ex-boyfriend Casey Aldridge, hoisting a shotgun in an open field.
And just like that, the critics came storming in with the fury of an angry parent. “A 10 year old with a shotgun. If that’s not redneck I don’t know what is," wrote one frustrated follower. Another chimed: “You’re so irresponsible. Guns are not a toy.”
As StyleCaster notes, fans also called out Spears and Watson — both self-proclaimed animal lovers and pet parents themselves — for allowing their daughter to kill doves for sport.
“It’s ironic they post about their amazing dog (who is totally dependent on them) all the time when they then go and kill animals that are living their own lives minding their own business," another Instagram user commented, insisting that allowing their daughter to operate a gun is a display of poor parenting. "Teaching kids to kill things is weird leave that till they’re older, man.”
As it stands, the couple has yet to address the controversy surrounding the photograph.
But where do you stand on the issue: bad parenting or a situation blown out of proportion?
